Hand painted Tibetan Buddhist artform originating from as far back as the 8th century. Each painting is same in design but truly a one of one as they are individually hand crafted from start to finsih.
A total of 6 weeks process and painted with 18 carrot gold, our ‘Thangka Art’ collection use techniques passed down from a thousand generations, the cotton canvas made from yak skin is boiled for over a week to then be stretched over a wooden frame and tightened.
A hand made glue also created from yak leather is then applied to the canvas. Finishing off with vigorous stone rubbing to smoothen out the threads to ensure the finest finish.
To create the paint artists gather vegetables in Tibet mountains as primary colours of the painting whilst using 18 carrot gold to give it the iconic light shimmer. The vegetables are pounded together with stone and mortar mixed with other ingredients to then achieve the final product.
